LASEK stands for Laser-assisted epithelial keratomileusis. The process involves softening and separating the thin epithelial layer of the cornea tissue instead of making a flap. This conserves cornea thickness of the eyes. After completion of the procedure, the cornea is loosened and refolded into its original place. Then, an excimer laser is used to shape the cornea surface, thus correcting the refractive errors of the eyes. LASEK eye surgery is a promising solution for patients having thin cornea, however, recovery rate is much slower than usual. Patients need to keep the bandage contact lenses (BCLs) for atleast three to five days post-surgery.
Book NowNormally, when light rays pass through the cornea surface and hit the retina, a clear image is created. Thereafter, the optic nerve (at the back of our eyes) perceives and transmits the stimulation to the brain for interpretation. This constitutes the whole process of vision.
Now, let’s take the example of those individuals who put glasses or contact lenses. This typically happens when there is an abnormality in the eyeball shape. The two most common issues are shortening and lengthening of the eyeballs. In medical language, the condition of having a longer eyeball is termed as ‘myopia’ while a shorter eyeball is known as ‘hyperopia’. A LASEK treatment helps to mitigate all these issues by reshaping the cornea so that light rays can fall directly on the retinal layer.
The surgery is also known as ‘surface ablation’ as no flap creation is involved. Here lies one of the major differences between LASEK and LASIK surgery. Moreover, the process consists of putting laser beam over the surface layer of eyes to create a small nick for scraping off corneal epithelium.
Book an AppointmentAs mentioned earlier, individuals who have reduced cornea must go for a LASEK eye surgery. This is because they need to protect the already thinned out eye tissue. Well, those who practise full time martial arts or any other vigorous sports can also get this procedure done. This helps in contributing towards better and sharper vision. Similarly, armed personnel or policemen may opt for this surgery. As no flap will be present, there is hardly any risk of damage even if the face is punched hard!
The time required for recovery is usually slower for LASEK surgery than other operative techniques. Yet, it is one of the most opted procedures. Let’s see the range of benefits that a LASER surgery offers. These include:
There is no specific complications post-surgery. However, certain patients may complain of low vision during night, reddening and drying up of eyes, visible flares, eye discharges etc. These are often temporary and generally resolve within a few days. Moreover, the surgery does not incur pain.
First, the doctors will give an overview of the process and its associated side effects. This allows the patient to make a well-informed choice as he/she can compare both the pros and cons of the surgery.
The surgeon will focus the wavefront-guided treatment towards the surface epithelium of the eye. However, no flap will be created in the process which is done in LASIK.
After completion of the procedure, the surgeon will put a bandage contact lens over the surface layer. This is done in order to protect the eye for atleast 7 days post-surgery. One must give rest to the eyes till it fully heals. Moreover, he/she should avoid rigorous activities during this period.
As already told, recovering eyesight after a LASEK surgery is slow in compare to LASIK treatment. It takes about 7 to 14 days to get the eyes healed completely. With time, vision improves and after several weeks, one can expect to get sharper eyesight.
